This is a very personal story, but one that completely changed how I look at health.
When my daughter was very young, I took her to the dentist for a routine checkup. I was told she had cavities and that the recommended solution was treatment under general anesthesia.
That didn’t feel right to me.
She was still very small, and I wasn’t comfortable with that approach. I went to a few different dentists, but the recommendation stayed the same.
So I started researching on my own.
Discovering a Different Approach
During that time, I came across a book:
Cure Tooth Decay: Heal and Prevent Cavities with Nutrition by Rami Nagel
This book introduced the idea that early-stage cavities may be supported through nutrition and remineralization.
The approach was not simple — it required strict diet changes, specific nutrients, and consistency over time.
What We Did
I followed the protocol quite closely for several months.
Her diet focused on:
- high-quality fats (butter, avocado)
- raw dairy (especially cheese)
- nutrient-dense animal foods
- limited fruit (mainly raspberries)
- no processed sugar
I also used supplements, including a fermented cod liver oil and butter oil blend.
For reference, this is the one I was using:
Green Pasture Fermented Cod Liver Oil & Butter Oil Blend
It wasn’t easy — especially getting a child to take it — but I stayed consistent.
Also, as part of our daily routine, we’ve been using a fluoride-free Boka toothpaste with nano-hydroxyapatite for years now, which is designed to support enamel remineralization.
For reference, this is the one we’ve been using:
Boka Fluoride Free Nano Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste
What Happened
After some time, I found a dentist who used a more holistic approach and offered ozone treatments.
After examining her teeth, he told me that the cavity had improved significantly and did not require the treatment that had originally been recommended.
He also treated early areas with ozone to prevent further development.
Key Idea Behind This Approach
The protocol from the book focuses on balancing:
- minerals (calcium, phosphorus)
- fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, K2 / Activator X)
- reducing acidity in the mouth
According to this perspective, dental health is closely connected to overall nutrition.
Core Nutrients for Dental Health
Fat-Soluble Vitamins (A, D, K2)
These are considered essential for remineralization.
Sources include:
- grass-fed butter and ghee
- liver
- fish eggs
- cod liver oil
- bone marrow
Minerals (Calcium & Trace Minerals)
Calcium intake is emphasized, along with proper balance.
Sources include:
- dairy (cheese, yogurt, milk)
- sardines with bones
- leafy greens (kale, collards)
- bone broth
Trace minerals:
- kelp powder
- seafood
B Vitamins & Nutrient Density
The protocol includes a strong focus on:
- liver (very important)
- eggs
- fish
- legumes (properly prepared)
Liver is recommended multiple times per week due to its nutrient density.
Vitamin C
Sources include:
- acerola powder
- berries
- green vegetables
- citrus
Higher doses are sometimes used short-term, followed by maintenance levels.
Healthy Fats
Healthy fats are a major part of the protocol:
- butter
- coconut oil
- animal fats
- avocado
These support absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
Foods and Preparation
The approach also emphasizes:
- cooked vegetables over raw (except a few)
- properly soaked grains and legumes
- reducing phytic acid
- avoiding processed sugar
Small amounts of natural sugars like honey or maple syrup are sometimes allowed depending on the situation.
Additional Support
Other elements mentioned include:
- bone broths
- fermented foods (yogurt, kefir)
- apple cider vinegar before meals
- herbal mouth rinses
- saltwater rinses
Important Notes
This approach requires:
- consistency
- strict diet control
- long-term commitment
It is much easier to follow with young children than with older children or adults.
Also:
- not all cavities can be reversed
- deeper decay typically requires professional treatment
Final Thoughts
This experience changed how I look at health and nutrition.
It showed me how closely the body is connected — and how much diet can influence different aspects of health.
At the same time, it’s important to stay balanced, informed, and work with professionals when needed.
This experience also connects to a more holistic approach to health, which I’ve written about in my Health Garden section, including a post on holistic dental care and daily routines.
